K-Pop Demon Hunters, the global phenomenon, has missed out on a prestigious award despite Netflix's efforts. The film, which took the world by storm, became a streaming sensation with over 541 million hours viewed worldwide and an estimated $25 million in domestic gross. However, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ruled it ineligible for the Film Awards due to a technicality. The issue arises from the film's release strategy, as it was released exclusively on Netflix after a theatrical run in the U.S. and the U.K. Netflix attempted to secure an exemption by submitting the movie following its theatrical release in 264 U.K. cinemas, but the BAFTA Film Committee rejected this bid. The rules state that eligible films must have a qualifying theatrical release, and the film's release pattern did not meet the requirements. If the film had been released day-and-date with streaming, it would have been eligible. Despite this setback, K-Pop Demon Hunters continues to dominate, with five Grammy nominations and a platinum-selling soundtrack. The IP's success led Netflix to partner with Mattel and Hasbro for a global toy license deal. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the movie follows the adventures of young pop stars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who are also demon hunters. Netflix and Sony are already planning a sequel for 2029, and fans eagerly await news of a potential theatrical release.
