Manchester Airport is on a roll! The past two years have been a record-breaking journey, with October 2024 being no exception.
Breaking Records and Breaking Barriers
Imagine a bustling airport, a hub of excitement and travel dreams coming true. That's Manchester Airport, where almost 2.9 million passengers passed through last month, a 2% increase from the previous October. But here's where it gets controversial: this isn't just a one-off; it's a consistent trend. Manchester Airport has been breaking monthly records for a solid 24 months now!
In 2023, the airport surpassed pre-pandemic passenger levels for the first time, recording its busiest October since 2019. And this is the part most people miss: the airport didn't just break records; it shattered them, beating the previous October record by a significant margin.
Last month's success was fueled by a half-term getaway, with over 114,000 passengers traveling through the airport on October 24th alone, making it the busiest day since the summer holidays.
Sun-Seekers and City Explorers
The month's top destinations were a mix of sun-soaked spots and city breaks. Dubai took the crown, offering its own brand of great weather, attractions, and onward connections to Asian destinations. Mediterranean hotspots like Antalya and Alicante were also popular, along with Amsterdam and Dublin.
A Smooth Journey, a Great Experience
Passengers at Manchester Airport enjoyed a seamless experience, with 80% waiting less than five minutes to reach security and 99% waiting under 15 minutes. That's impressive efficiency!
This bumper month coincides with the airport's decade-long, £1.3 billion transformation program, which has completely redeveloped Terminal 2 into a state-of-the-art super-terminal. Soon, this terminal will cater to around 75% of the airport's passengers, with most airlines moving in from Terminals 1 and 3.
The New Terminal's Impact
The majority of October's passengers benefited from the new facilities in Terminal 2, which has already won the prestigious Prix Versailles for architecture and design. It's a game-changer for the airport's capacity and customer experience.
Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport's Managing Director, said, "Here at Manchester Airport, we're proud of our role in connecting the North to the world. Seeing the airport bustling with holidaymakers is a testament to that. It's been fantastic to see so many people enjoying our new Terminal 2, and the feedback has been incredible."
"The past two years of monthly passenger records are a direct result of our investment in Terminal 2 and the wider airport operations. It's not just about the numbers; it's about delivering an exceptional customer experience and unlocking our full potential."
The investment in Terminal 2 has attracted new airlines like Hainan, IndiGo, Juneyao, and Pakistan International Airlines, and has also helped existing airlines expand their networks from Manchester.
"We're excited to continue breaking records and welcoming more passengers to Manchester Airport in the months and years to come," Woodroofe added.
What's Next for Manchester Airport?
The airport's growth and transformation continue, with new routes like Islamabad with Pakistan International Airlines and Delhi with IndiGo already launched or set to begin soon.
Over the coming months, more parts of Terminal 2 will open, including the Great Northern Market, a food hall featuring pop-up street food vendors, the airport's first Wetherspoons pub, new shops and bars like Fever Tree and Chanel, and a new pier to accommodate more flights.
Some airlines will move from Terminals 1 and 3 to Terminal 2, joining the majority of passengers who have already benefited from the new facilities.
Manchester Airport has also announced plans to improve Terminal 3, expanding it to utilize space that will be available when Terminal 1 closes. New parts of Terminal 3, including a sports bar called Sporting Chance, will open early next year.
So, what do you think? Is Manchester Airport's growth a sign of a thriving travel industry, or is it a symptom of over-expansion? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
